Storm Emma to dump TWO FEET of snow TODAY as death toll rises and UK faces gas shortage
BRITAIN is facing a gas supply crisis as Storm Emma blasts in, bringing two feet of snow today. National Grid, last night, warned huge demand during the big freeze could trigger a countrywide
shortage. And the death toll rose to 10 after a seven-year-old girl was hit by a skidding car on an icy road in Cornwall.
The Met Office yesterday issued a red weather warning for the South-west – the first top-level snow alert recorded for England.
It warned of blizzards, loss of electricity and mobile phone signals, damage to trees and “severe snow drifting” ahead of Storm Emma’s arrival.
A National Grid spokesman said: “Due to the extremely cold weather we are seeing very high demand for gas so we issued a gas deficit warning which is a notice to the gas market that we would like more gas to be made available.”
